Anton Grasso’s Latest: Qrusa

Outlook Coop have recently published Anton Grasso’s latest book. Qrusa (Sourness) is the author’s 49th book in a career of 35 years.

Born in Paola in 1952, Grasso published his first book in 1974 at the age of 22. Iljieli bla Qamar is the first modern collection of horror stories. Since then he has published novels, translations of novels and short stories, a volume of essays, poetry, an autobiography, two studies of the paranormal, one of which, Enigma, was adapted as a very successful television series, winning the 1995 Broadcasting Authority Award as the best documentary. He also published 26 volumes of stories, mainly with a horror theme, for which he has become a household name. Most of his books have been out of print, 11 of them have been reprinted.

Finishing his studies at the Archbishop’s Seminary, Grasso used to teach Religious Knowledge, Maltese and English at Senglea’s and Bighi’s trade schools. In 1978, he started reading his horror stories on Radio Malta in the programme Stejjer tal-Wahx, a 30-minute programme which ran on station for over 20 years. In 1981, Grasso joined the national television station as a programme director, a post which he held until 2004.

In the year 2000, Outlook Coop planned a project of publishing Grasso’s best short stories in six volumes selected and revised by the author himself. Incens, the first volume was published in the year 2000, followed by Limbu (2001), Infern (2003), Hurrieq (2005), Ghadam (2008) and Qrusa, the sixth and final volume of his best stories, recently published. These six volumes include 132 of Grasso’s best stories.
