This week saw Sheffield United’s first team set up a warm weather training camp in Malta as part of the club’s pre-season preparations.
A number of activities on the island have been set up to provide travelling fans and the local public an opportunity to get closer to the team. The first of these activities was staged on Thursday morning, when the Blades opened their summer training camp to the public at the Hibernians Stadium. The session provided fans with a rare insight into the intense training programme the players undergo during pre-season. The event marked the first public appearance for new Blades’ signings Lee Williamson and wing prospect Kyel Reid.
United’s visit to Malta has enabled Kevin Blackwell to observe trialists Glen Little and Julian Gray at close quarters. Little, the 33-year-old, winger has been released by Premier League club Portsmouth, while 29-year-old Gray has spurned the offer of a new contract at Fulham in a bid to join United.
Commenting on the Blades warm weather training, manager Kevin Blackwell said: “The hospitality has been first class and everyone cannot do enough for us, at the hotel and at the training ground. This set-up is ideal for pre-season training and, of course, Justin Haber can show us around!”
Blackwell added: “It is going very well, we’ve done some good sessions and the two new lads, Lee Williamson and Kyel Reid, have fitted in, as have Julian Gray and Glen Little who are on trial. Joining a new club can be hard enough but add to that the intensity of pre-season and they can all be pleased with what they have shown.”
Meanwhile, Maltese International Haber, back to his roots, has naturally been the man in demand as far as United’s tour party is concerned, many of the fans stopping him and wishing him well.
Haber said: “Last season was a magnificent experience for me and I was delighted to be part of such a big promotion challenge even though I didn’t play in the first team. “I learned a lot and am now looking forward to showing the Gaffer that I deserve to stay with Sheffield United.”
