This year’s Malta Arts Festival is proud to present “King” J. Lear, a theatre project based on Shakespeare’s King Lear by the Laboratorio Permanente di Ricerca sull’Arte dell’Attore and Scarlattine Teatro. The performance will take place on 14 and 15 July at the Argotti Gardens, Floriana at 9pm
“King” J. Lear follows the plot of the Shakespearian text, while being transferred to a contemporary setting. Lear does not divide lands, but distributes his financial possessions. Power of information, war, the persuasive prowess of Edmund, together with Lear’s daughters, generate dramatic action. It all happens inside a television studio; in the course of three television programmes and two intervals. During these intervals, when the spotlights are off, a submerged world takes shape in the dark. The spectator of “King” J. Lear is reflected in the chorus of “senators”, a constant presence that contributes in the making of the show which is the property of K.J.L.TV. The chorus of “senators” is the very first witness to this grotesque show, suspended between the constructed reality of mass-media and the arduous reality of the world we live in. Is it still possible to believe in what we see and do? or is Truth that which takes place in the made-up world of virtuality?
The play’s text is based on Shakespeare’s King Lear and is directed by Marco Gobetti and Domenico Castaldo. The cast includes Peter Busuttil, Katia Capato, Giulietta De Bernardi, Alessandro Dell’Atti, Ruggero Dondi, Marco Gobetti, Francesca Netto and Pino Scicluna. The lights designer is Matteo Lainati, music and video direction is provided by Francesca Bono and Fabio Ferrero and the costumes are designed by Atelier Ombradifoglia – Torino.
