Swimming competitions got off to a start yesterday in the Municipal swimming pool in Lagos. Swimmer Andrew Chetcuti won Malta’s first medal, taking silver in the 200m freestyle final, during the 61st edition of the Fisec Games being held in Algrave, Portugal. Chetcuti’s time of 2min 01.12sec set a new national record in short distance course.
Robert Micallef won bronze when he finished third in the 400m individual medley final. He finished with a time of 4min 59.60sec as he sliced through the water in the last metres.
Another two national records in short distance were set in the 50m breaststroke and 50m freestyle semi-finals. In the breaststroke Daniel Galea recorded a time of 31.74sec, while Andrew Chetcuti swam a time of 24.96sec.
In athletics, Jeremy Borg finished third in the long jump semi-final. He later finished fifth in the final with a 6.32m jump. Clayton Scheldon and Luca Pace also qualified for the 200m final. Annalise Vassallo and Maria Sciberras also climbed to the final finishing with a time of 28.12sec in the 200m and 48.26sec in the 300m hurdles, respectively.
