Birkirkara To decide on whether to sign foreign goalkeeper this week

Birkirkara FC are to take a decision on whether to sign a new foreign goalkeeper this week.

Coach Paul Zammit, formerly of Valletta, told The Malta Independent yesterday, that despite there is still no president after the resignation of Victor Zammit, he wanted this issue to be resolved by this week.

He said: “We are restructuring the club, even at the nursery levels. But after the departure of Bernard Paris, who has been loaned to Floriana, we are looking at strengthening our goalkeeping position, where currently there is only Omar Borg.

“We have given a chance to Italian Francesco Maiorani, who is still 21, but is a former Roma goalie who played at all youth levels. He was even in Luciano Spalletti’s squad, one of four goalkeepers two years ago. He played in the match against Sheffield Wednesday last week, but we also have other options.

“There are two others of a good standing with whom we have to negotiate as well this week. We have to take a good look at them before any decision is made. And our third foreigner to accompany Ronni Hartvig and Sylvano Comvalius might not be a goalkeeper. In fact, we also have a Serbian central defender, Nikola Bukanac, who is on trial with us.”

Zammit said that if the club decides to retain Bukanac as the third foreigner, then they have to look for a goalkeeper from local sources.

Zammit admitted that the Stripes were aware that Sliema W. and Valletta have made the best possible signings and that Hibernians had a very strong squad as well. He added: “They will certainly be among the front runners once again for this season’s title of champions. At Birkirkara we are in a re-structuring phase, that is, building a new squad and this means that we will be introducing several new faces, some of whom have already played in the Europa League matches.

“We simply hope that this re-structuring programme will lead the club to higher levels and even become a top challenger within the next three seasons.”
