Maltese swimmers won more medals on Sunday night and yesterday during the 61st edition of these Games in the Algarve, Portugal.
On Sunday Andrew Chetcuti won the first medal – a silver – after finishing second in the 200m freestyle. Yesterday the same swimmer won another silver medal in the 100m backstroke and a bronze in the 50m freestyle where he clocked 24.99 seconds.
Robert Micallef, who had finished third in the 400m individual medley to claim bronze on Sunday, won a silver medal yesterday, finishing second in the 100m fly.
David Zammit won a bronze medal in the 100m freestyle while Daniel Galea also won a bronze in the 200m breaststroke in a time of 2:30.64. This was a new national record. Later the same swimmer claimed another bronze medal after finishing third in the 50m breaststroke.
Yesterday morning, two national records (short course) were also set up as David Zammit clocked 26.83secs in the 50m butterfly while Andrew Chetcuti was timed at 54.74 in the 100m freestyle.
Another bronze medal was clinched by the 4x200m freestyle relay boys team comprising Robert Micallef, Daniel Galea, Andrew Chetcuti and Beppe Grech.
By yesterday morning the Maltese swimmers had a haul of three silvers and six bronze medals. They are under the charge of Gail Rizzo.
Also yesterday morning, on the Lagos international athletics track, Bertrand Sant qualified for the final of the 400m boys.
But Chris Chetcuti and Simon Spiteri failed to qualify in the 1,500m, finishing seventh and eighth from 14 participants.
In Table-Tennis, the Maltese players – James Dawson, Christoper Attard, Marcus Portelli and Andrea Portelli – took part in the boys’ doubles competition which is being held on a round robin basis.
