Malta Independent Wednesday, 22 July 2009, 00:00 Last update: about 12 years ago

What began as a vision by two law students Ralph Agius Fernandez and Michael Calleja has finally become a reality! Swieqi finally has a club and United held its first ever press conference on Monday at the Ibragg Parish Church in Swieqi.

The President, Ralph Agius Fernandez, stated the enthusiasm which had gripped the town of Swieqi was focused on the fact that the club was offering a much needed identity to a relatively modern area.

He also pointed out the many obstacles the committee is facing particularly as regards to pitches especially since there are no forms of sports facilities in the area. He explained how a committee was formed on the 14 April 2009 and an AGM was held last month. He also thanked the Local Council for the support offered in this new adventure.

The Secretary, Michael Calleja, then explained that very few sponsorships were found and the only real financial help was provided by Robert Arrigo MP.

The secretary also focused on how the club will also be registering new players in the future and that it had also registered with the Kunsill Malti ghall-Isport.

Vice-President Gavin Ellul then discussed how three tryout sessions were held, one at Infetti Ground at Birkirkara, the other at Attard FC ground and the final session was held at the University grounds. From these tryouts, approximately 36 players were chosen for the pre-season training.

Roberto Debrincat is the manager (coach) of the team. Whilst stating that he was honoured to be Swieqi’s first ever coach, he asked all players present to give their all during pre-season. He explained that friendlies will be organised prior to Swieqi’s first competitive game. The coach also outlined in detail his vision for the club for the next year and highlighted the fact that Swieqi has nothing to be afraid of other teams especially since he was very impressed with the quality of players who attended the tryouts.

The club’s first ever training session took place yesterday at Ghaxaq FC’s ground.
