Malta Independent Thursday, 23 July 2009, 00:00 Last update: about 17 years ago

Malta won all their group games, as they disposed of Moldova, in a match which was thought to be the most difficult yet, but which had Moldova too preoccupied with the presence of Samuel Deguara, when he was given special attention, sometimes too special.

The other Maltese players put in their very good share, as Nigel Sultana and Tevin Falzon went in with confidence in the opposing zone. Moldova were limited to a low score, as the Maltese lads made some sterling defensive cover, to give the true meaning of teamwork.

Malta will now meet Andorra in the first semi final tomorraw, as today is a rest day.

Malta raced into a 9-0 advantage, as Sultana opened up his tally.

Moldova recovered, to cut down on their deficit, going near, but Malta had the better ending to the session. to extend their lead once more.

In the second period the points were scarcer, as both sides were more wary at the back.

Malta put in a 6-0 run, ending with a Gianluca Cuschieri trey.

Moldova replied with another trey, by Gordienco, but till the end of the quarter the locals went into a 30-15 lead, as Sultana, Falzon and Deguara made more hoops.

After the break Moldova began with a couple of triples, by Melniciuc and Cusnir, but Malta rallied back, and a Falzon trey started off a solid 15-0 run, which had Moldova reeling. Titco made a trey for the visitors, but Malta were in a confident mmod, and a 7-2 run ended the session, as Malta were on a 30-15 advantage, with a session to go.

In the last quarter Moldova made a final spurt to register a more respectable score, and they totted up a 9-0 run, with a Gordienco triple.

Malta were content to absorb some pressure, and in the last stages of the amtch some bench players made their way on court, to have a taste of the victory.
