New national coach John Buttigieg and his assistant Carmel Busuttil started in their new post yesterday afternoon as they led the players of the national team squad during a training session at the Ta’ Qali grounds. The two were appointed by the MFA last week. It is the first time in over 16 years that a Maltese has been appointed national team coach. Previously, it was Robert Gatt who served the MFA in that position, though for only four days before Milorad Kosanovic was appointed a few weeks later. Earlier Pippo Psaila had a two-year spell as national team coach between June 1991 and June 1993.
