The Gloster Canary is one of the most popular breeds of canaries in the world. The most outstanding feature of this bird is the “Corona” which adorns its head.
For the first time in Malta canary buffs were present for the launching of a book about their favourite bird. For this occasion, four of the most qualified persons in the world in connection with the Gloster Canary met in Malta at the Grand Hotel Excelsior for this event. Mr and Mrs Nick Barret (the authors of The Gloster Fancy Canary), and two judges, Dave Thomas and Peter Warfield said that it was only fair that this publication was launched in Malta since it was through the zeal and dedication of the Maltese breeders that the second edition of this book has been launched.
Mario Zahra, secretary of the Malta Gloster Breeders Society, explained that when he tried to buy the first edition of this publication (printed in 1987) over the internet he was shocked to find out that it was priced at $300. It was then he realized how difficult it was for any newcomer to this hobby to obtain such a vital tool to breed and enhance the quality of his birds. He immediately contacted Mr and Mrs Barret and persuaded them to publish the second edition, which means this book is now readily available for one and all.
This book is full of scientific and genetic information regarding the Gloster canary. There are minute details, which include feather and colour mixing, proper maintenance of the birds’ habitat and also a precise explanation of how to pair these birds.
Mr Zahra reiterated that it was a great satisfaction for local club breeders that the launching of this famous book took place in Malta. It will surely help to enhance the birds’ quality and increase the interest of newcomers to this hobby.
