Government piled up €2.4 million in new debt every single day in last 12 months, PN says

Despite still failing to present any solutions to the biggest problems facing Maltese and Gozitan families, such as the rising cost of living, environmental destruction, the healthcare crisis, unplanned population growth, traffic congestion, and failing infrastructure, Prime Minister Robert Abela and Finance Minister Clyde Caruana continue to break record after record when it comes to the highest level of debt our country has ever seen in its history, the Nationmalist Party saod Friday.

The latest figures released this morning by the National Statistics Office (NSO) show that at the end of May, the national debt stood at almost €11 billion.

Malta has never had this much debt, and Robert Abela alone has created as much debt for Malta as all the previous Prime Ministers combined.

In fact, Abela is responsible for half of all our national debt, as when he took over from Joseph Muscat, Malta's debt stood at just over €5 billion. This means that under Abela, the national debt has more than doubled. The has become synonymous with debt. In the last year alone, he increased the debt by €867 million - that's almost €2.4 million in new debt every day, the PN said.

This debt record is leading to another record - the interest payments that the Government is having to make using taxpayers' money. Today, the interest paid on the debt stands at €118 million, and in the first five months of this year alone, it increased by nearly €15 million compared to the same period last year.

This alarming increase in debt is yet another confirmation of Robert Abela's failure to overcome the challenges faced by Maltese and Gozitan families, who every day are seeing prices go up while their income shrinks faster and faster.

While the country's debt continues to spiral out of control with nothing to show for it, and the interest burden rises, Government Ministers and their close associates continue to grow richer - as even government insiders have admitted.

And now we also know that even the Labour Party itself has no shame in enriching itself at the people's expense, as seen this week when the Constitutional Court found it guilty of illegally holding private property in Birżebbuġa for 45 years to use as a party club, and now the Maltese people now have to foot a compensation bill of €840,000 for Labour's theft, the PN said.
