Nu Folk singer Adem in Malta

Malta Independent Sunday, 24 January 2010, 00:00 Last update: about 13 years ago

Nu-folk English singer-songwriter Adem will be headlining an intimate concert when he plays at the MITP Theatre, Valletta on 6 February. Local acts Sylvan Borg and Stalko will also feature on the bill in what should be a highly anticipated music event.

Describing Adem Illhan simply as being a singer-songwriter would be an injustice to the man’s diverse talents. The multi-instrumentalist is virtually on a never ending crusade to make music in every possible form by either being a member of various bands, producing or collaborating with other artists and even scoring movies.

His latest film was the critically acclaimed Armando Iannucci flick In The Loop. Adem is also the founder and curator of the Homefires Festival which takes place in London and which was voted one of Time Out’s Events of the Year, showcasing the best of left-field quiet music. The festival has featured artists like Grizzly Bear, Jose Gonzales, Isobel Campbell and Joanna Newsome to name a few.

Adem followed up Homesongs with 2007’s Love and Other Planets and interestingly enough in 2008 he released a cover album Takes, where he brought a stunning and evocative interpretation of songs from artists that inspired him when he was growing up such as Bjork, PJ Harvey, Smashing Pumpkins and Yo La Tengo.

Never one to rest on his laurels Adem also played on Vashti Bunyan’s album Lookaftering, remixed American post-rock band Explosions in The Sky and contributed the song Mojo Pin on the Tim and Jeff Buckley tribute album called Dream Brother.

Tickets for this concert can be bought on line from www.maltaticket.com or from any Vodafone, Agenda and Exotique outlet at e12. Performances start at 8.30pm.

The concert is being brought to you by HairyAmp in collaboration with the British Council.
