The Malta Hotels and Restaurants Association (MHRA) said Wednesday it believes that the current electricity disruptions experienced during periods of extreme heat should be recognised as a national matter requiring an urgent, coordinated, and long-term response rather than being viewed solely as a ministerial issue.

The increasing frequency and intensity of heatwaves are being experienced across Malta, the Mediterranean and Europe. These events are clear indicators that climate change is placing unprecedented pressure on national infrastructure. Malta must therefore adapt and strengthen its resilience to increasingly extreme weather conditions, both in summer and in winter.

The MHRA is calling for the urgent development of a National Climate Resilience and Energy Security Plan, based on facts, evidence and tested solutions. The plan must be holistic in nature, bringing together all relevant stakeholders to address not only electricity infrastructure, but also emergency preparedness, backup generation capacity, smarter energy management, renewable energy integration, technological innovation, research, contingency planning and clear operational protocols during periods of extreme weather.

Reliable electricity is essential for residents, businesses and the country's economic competitiveness. It is equally important for the visitor experience, particularly during the peak tourism season, when power outages during extreme heat inevitably leave a negative impression on Malta as a destination.

The MHRA said it believes this challenge requires a united national effort. Climate resilience is a shared responsibility that transcends sectors and institutions. Government, businesses, infrastructure providers, academia and civil society must work together with a sense of urgency to ensure Malta is better prepared for the realities of a changing climate.
