Crime Docu-drama on TVM

Malta Independent Sunday, 11 April 2010, 00:00 Last update: about 13 years ago

A sizzling, new, revolutionary TV programme will be hitting the headlines come 4 May. Hot on the heels of the very successful four-part documentary The Saharan, which is still being screened worldwide, AAB Films is now plunging into the local market by producing a series exclusively for TVM starting in May and entitled Reati.

Reati is a docu-drama series of six episodes each having true stories of crimes that took place in Malta over the centuries. Each programme is introduced by the author, Eddie Attard, Malta’s celebrated crime historian and then narrated by Gorg Peresso. Each episode has three separate stories which are performed by “actors” who are totally unknown and who were often picked straight off the streets, cafes etc. The crimes range from infanticide, crimes of passion and murder of children to aggravated theft from churches.

After each story, a prominent Maltese legal/forensic expert will briefly and concisely discuss the case. Among the experts are former Chief Justice Guze Mifsud Bonnici, ballistics expert Brigadier Maurice Calleja, pathologist Dr Bridget Ellul, Assistant Police Commissioners Casha and Calleja and lawyers Joseph Giglio and Stefano Filletti.

The production is based on the modern idiom of speed. This type of production, never before used by a Maltese production house, has been proved to be the most “attention grabbing” method of production devised so far. All the visual effects are accompanied by striking sound effects and original music. The entire series is rated “U” and is intended for a general family audience. This concept is bound to attract a high viewership.

Edward (Eddie) Attard was born in Sliema in 1947 and received his education at the Lyceum. He joined the Malta Police Force in 1966 and between 1977 and 1986 he was in charge of police publications. Attard published L-istorija tal-Pulizija ta’ Malta, Malta (1994); Il-Habs, L-Istorja tal-Habsijiet f’Malta mill-1800, Malta (2000), one of PIN’s Kullana Kulturali series; Delitti li Baqghu Jissemmew, Vol. 1 (2001) and Vol. 2 (2002); Delitti f’Malta, Malta (2001); and Il-Piena Kapitali, Malta (2002) plus several other publications.
