During the final session of the week at the Malta Stock Exchange, the Index terminated in positive territory as it registered a marginal gain of 0.1 per cent to close at the 3,385.9 level. This happened when the gains registered in Bank of Valletta made well for the losses registered in Middlesea Insurance. Trading activity was low, as volume of 33,155 shares was transacted across 17 deals in just four different listings.
Bank of Valletta was the day’s sole gainer as the equity rose by 2c, which equates to an increase of 0.6 per cent to close at €3.20. During much of the day, the Bank was registering an increase of 4c in its share price, trading at an intra-day high of €3.22. However, later on selling pressure moved the price back down to its current close. The Bank was also the day’s most actively traded equity as investors swapped 8,445 shares across eight deals for a market value of €27,064. Bids for 500 shares at €3.18 and offers of 7,183 shares at €3.29 were the session’s best unsatisfied positions at the close of the trading session.
On the other hand, Middlesea Insurance was the session’s only loser as the equity dropped by 1c or 1 per cent to end the day at the €1.00 level, which is it’s lowest level in a period of almost three months. Investors in the insurance company transacted an aggregate of 9,150 shares across five deals.
Elsewhere in the financial services sector, HSBC Bank Malta registered no change in price, closing unaltered at €2.84. Activity in the Bank was muted as a volume of 560 shares were transacted across two deals.
Meanwhile, the only non-financial to be active in the equity market was International Hotel Investments. The hotel property and management company terminated the day without registering any movement in price, closing unchanged at €0.83.
In the fixed interest sector of the market, activity was also on the low side and spread over a single corporate bond and seven government stocks. In the corporate debt market the only active bond was the 6.2% Mizzi Organisation Finance 2016-2019, which registered a drop of 75 ticks when two investors swapped €20,000 nominal to close at €103.25.
In the sovereign debt market, all bonds ended the day in negative territory, however the highest turnover was registered in the 4.8% MGS 2016 (II), when €185,653 nominal were exchanged across two deals. The bond dropped by 36 ticks to close at €109.14.
