The Vodafone Malta Foundation has made a commitment to help fund a new informational booklet titled Make Healthy Choices - Breast health is up to you. The leaflet, created by Europa Donna and promoted by the Breast Care Support Group, helps women set and reach goals to achieve a healthy lifestyle with a specific focus on breast care.
“Breast cancer is the most common cancer among women worldwide, with an estimated 1.1 million new cases and 411,000 deaths every year,” said Gertrude Abela from the Breast Care Support Group. “The aim of the promotional leaflet is to increase awareness about breast health, about the risks of cancer and its prevention and to encourage women to take charge of their own breast health through healthy lifestyle choices.”
Gemma Mifsud Bonnici, Chairperson Vodafone Malta Foundation, said: “How women choose to live can influence their future breast health, even from an early age. This brochure from the Breast Care Support Group offers useful and practical tips that help empower women to take care of themselves. The Foundation believes strongly that awareness is key, and that it’s the first step towards making informed choices.” Last year Vodafone, with the collaboration of the Breast Care Support Group, held free health sessions for employees with the intention of increasing awareness on the incidence of breast cancer and to instill a culture of support among family and friends.
The Breast Care Support Group was originally set up in 1989 to support women going through a mastectomy, but its aim was soon extended to helping women with any form of breast health problem. Another crucial aim is that of making women of all ages aware, and seek help immediately at the first warning signs. The Group is also dedicated to helping survivors reclaim a positive body image and a healthy lifestyle. In 2004, the Group joined Europa Donna, the European Breast Cancer Coalition, whose members come from 45 different countries.
