Italy Celebrates 150 years of national unity

17 March is the anniversary of the proclamation of the Kingdom of Italy and the following activities are planned to be held at the Italian Cultural Institute, Valletta.

14 – 19 March – University of Malta

A week dedicated to all potential future students explaining the teaching activities, cultural entertainment and sports programmes offered by the University.

Thursday, 17 March from 10am – a whole morning dedicated to the Italian language. Professor Sandro Caruana, Associate Professor and Head of the Department of Arts and Languages in Education of the University of Malta, will guide more than 100 students from secondary schools. Free Admission.

Tuesday, 15 March – Hall of the Italian Cultural Institute

How many times have we complained about the poor lighting of various archaeological sites, monuments or ruins? Do you wish to learn more and listen to any suggestions about this? A conference by Arch. Daniela Soddu on “Led and Biofilm in the lighting of archaeological monuments in Malta” will be held at 6.30pm. Free Admission.

Wednesday, 16 March – Hall of the Italian Cultural Institute

Performance of Launeddas by Roberto Corona and Rocco Melis

Dr Anna Porcheddu, University of Malta, is proud to introduce a tribute to the exquisite traditional instrument of her native Sardinia, the Launeddas. This three-pipe instrument is the oldest and most unique instrument in Sardinia, and has a beautiful and captivating sound. Roberto Corona and Rocco Melis are renowned performers, whose names are synonymous with the launeddas. Concert at 7pm. Free Admission.

Thursday, 17 March– Hall of the Italian Cultural Institute

Venetian Art From Giorgione To Tiepolo

Lecture by Fr Marius Zerafa at 6.30pm to better understand modern and contemporary art. Free Admission.

Saturday, 19 March at 7.30 pm – Kempinski Hotel, San Lawrenz, Gozo

The supporters of The Friends of the Sick and the Elderly in Gozo and Happy Moments Kenya, under the patronage of the Italian Embassy and the Italian Cultural Institute, invite you to a charity concert by virtuoso pianist M.ro Michelangelo Carbonara. Music by L. Van Beethoven, F. Chopin, F. Liszt, R. Schumann and G. Gershwin.

M.ro Carbonara is an artist who continues to rise in the survey of contemporary pianists.

The concert starts at 7.30pm.

Thursday, 24 March – Hall of the Italian Cultural Institute

Screening of the film Dieci inverni by Valerio Mieli, 2009. The film participated in the Mostra Internazionale d’Arte Cinematografica di Venezia 2009, and the Tokyo International Film Festival. It won the David di Donatello 2010 for Best Debut and the Nastro d’Argento for Best First Work. The film, which starts at 6.30pm, is in Italian with English subtitles. Free Admission.

Friday, 25 March – Aula Magna of the Valletta Campus (Old University Building), St Paul Street, Valletta

In collaboration with Dr Simon Mercieca, director of the Mediterranean Institute of the University of Malta, the Italian Embassy and the Italian Cultural Institute invite you to a meeting with Professor Cosimo Ceccuti, president of the historical journal Nuova Antologia, considered one of the oldest and most prestigious journals which have accompained the cultural and civil history of the united Italy. The theme of the lecture shall be the Unity of Italy from the Risorgimento to the present time. The meeting starts at 7pm and admission is by invitation.

Friday, 25 March – Hall of the Italian Cultural Institute

Under the patronage of the Italian Cultural Institute, the Maltese Poets Association is pleased to invite you to a poetry and music evening. The audience will listen to poems in Maltese, in Italian and in other languages interspersed with music pieces played by a band of Maltese musicians. The activity starts at 7pm. Free Admission.
