Malta Independent Tuesday, 22 March 2011, 00:00 Last update: about 13 years ago

The Trapani Birgi Airport in Sicily is closed to all civilian air traffic for an indefinite period due to the ongoing military action in Libya.

Ryanair, which operates flights to and from Malta three times a week, has re-routed its flights to/from Palermo Airport situated 90 kilometres from Trapani Airport.

All passengers are being advised to report to Palermo Airport for their flights.

The airline is publishing a list of re-routed flights for the day on its website as well as updated news as the situations develops.

By late yesterday afternoon, a spokesperson for the Malta International Airport said it had not been officially informed of the situation and could not comment on the company’s plans, although he expected notice to be received within hours. He explained Ryanair is the only airline to operate from a military airport and consequently, no other flights to and from Malta are being affected.

“Otherwise it is business as usual at the MIA,” he said.
