Malta Independent Friday, 3 June 2011, 00:00 Last update: about 13 years ago

FinanceMalta is the principle sponsor of the Lawyers European Football Cup which is being held in Benidorm, Spain this week. At a joint press conference held at the Chamber of Advocates in Valletta, Malta, between FinanceMalta representatives and the La Vallette team the kit was unveiled sporting the FinanceMalta logo.

Addressing those present Dr George Hyzler the Chef de Mission for the Malta team said that “28 teams will play a number of fixtures in the Eurolawyers tournament - a new record for the competition that has been gaining momentum over the last few years. This year Teams are coming from the wider European continent including Russia, Turkey and Israel”. Dr Hyzler went on to say, “In fact, football teams from Malta have been participating in this event since 1984 when the Mundiavocat organisation organised the first football tournament for lawyers”.

The Mundiavocat event is an annual football tournament for lawyers, usually referred to as the Lawyers World Cup. The Mundiavocat organisation holds rotating global and regional events every year in both a World Cup and European Cup event. This year’s event is the Eurolawyers tournament. It is restricted to lawyers from countries within Europe rather than just the EU. The Lawyers World Cup usually attracts some 2,000 lawyers while the Eurolawyers tournament usually attracts up to a thousand lawyers each year. Last year’s event generated a considerable amount of work for Maltese lawyers. Indeed, several law firms in Malta started their network of international contacts in financial services through the Mundiavocat events held in the early 1980s.

Euro lawyers presents an ideal opportunity for FinanceMalta as principal sponsor of the Eurolawyers tournament to showcase Malta as a financial services jurisdiction since all participants in the event are practicing lawyers who often serve as gatekeepers to the financial services industry. Each team usually registers approximately 25 players who must all be lawyers. Each team includes other staff such as coaching and medical staff. So the total number of people attending this event is expected to reach around 650, all of whom would receive the FinanceMalta Investment guide and Business Directory – the flagship publication showcasing Malta’s finance centre.

FinanceMalta’s Head of business development Bruno L’ecuyer said that the legal profession was one of the key groups responsible for the exponential growth in business coming to Malta, he added that it was for that reason that FinanceMalta would be partaking in a number of initiatives to raise the profile of the Islands finance centre aimed at this key group.
