AD 1062 – A Musical

Malta Independent Thursday, 16 June 2011, 00:00 Last update: about 12 years ago

On Friday 8th July at 8:30pm, the community of San Lawrenz - Gozo will be presenting the musical AD 1062. This musical will narrate the story of one of the miracles linked to the cult of Saint Lawrence who was martyred in Rome in the year 258 AD.

St Lawrence is the patron saint of the village of San Lawrenz in Gozo and also of the town of Vittoriosa in Malta.

The story takes us back to the year 1062 in Italy where, in a Benedictine convent, St Lawrence appears to Brother Ferdinand, a monk who had a great devotion to St Lawrence. During this apparition, St Lawrence asks him to ask the Pope of that time, Pope Alexander, to celebrate mass in that Convent. As testimony of this apparition, St Lawrence gives the monk his cincture, the girdle (or long chord) that the saint wore around the waist with vestments worn for religious functions. The story evolves around this event with the intrigues and also the miracle that St Lawrence permits to continue to give evidence not only of the apparition to the monk, but also to reaffirm that the cincture truly belonged to St Lawrence.

The music for this musical is the composition of Joe Formosa from San Lawrenz, who has a vast experience in our country’s musical scene. The script, which relates the story of this event is written by Govann Attard, another name synonymous with scripting musicals and songs in our islands.

The CD was recorded in the Freetime Productions Studio in Ta’ Xbiex, Malta with the participation of well known Maltese and Gozitan singers including Pamela, Glen Vella, J Anvil, Noel Galea, Mario Caruana, Leontine, Angela Spiteri and Domenic Cini amongst others.

At the moment in the small locality of San Lawrenz where the musical will be held, the last preparations and rehearsals are underway so that on the 8th of July, we will be able to enjoy a spectacle of music, song dance, drama and art. Entrance for this musical is free of charge.
