Last Saturday marked the closure of the 2010-2011 season for En Garde Fencing Club.
An Under 16years and Under 10years Foil fencing competition was organised at the Club’s training venue at St Martin’s College in Swatar. The event was well attended with almost 20 participants taking part in the various categories.
The FIE format for competitions was used with all fencers first fencing each other in a ‘best out of five hits’ pool, which later led to a ‘best out of 15 hits’ direct elimination barage that led to the finals.
The Under 16 years competition was won by Neil Zammit who beat his brother Nathan 15-10, in an exciting final. Ella Miceli Farrugia won bronze after she defeated Kurt Degiorgio 15-11.
The Under 10 years Foil competition was held with the use of special electronic plastic foils and masks, which where designed especially for young children.
Remarkably six-year-old Aiden Borg beat the 10-year-old Nikos Chircop 10-8 in a very exciting final that could have gone either way. Zachary Pisani and Daniel Caruana both placed third.
The competition was held under the auspices of the Malta Academy of Fencing. Fencing Masters Daniel Sammut, Antoine Bonello and Kenneth Spiteri presided over the matches.
En Garde Fencing Club have been teaching this Olympic sport for the past 10 years at St Martin’s College. Lessons will commence once again in October. Anyone who is interested in trying out this sport may contact Maestro Daniel Sammut on 21 639188 / 9940 7388 or e-mail on [email protected]
