More Local Councils in Malta are choosing to go green on traffic signs by installing Smart Light Systems eco-friendly pedestrian crossing signage. After the success registered in a pilot project between the company and the Attard local council, this locality has now extended the project to include 10 eco-friendly pedestrian crossings.
Over the past couple of months Smart Light Systems collected data and feedback about the first prototype of eco-friendly pedestrian crossing signs and continued the product development life cycle thereafter to produce a new and improved version based on suggestions received.
More projects are underway in collaboration with the Iklin local council and Transport Malta to extend the use of eco-friendly traffic signage systems.
Eco-friendly pedestrian crossings in Sliema were installed on the approach road leading to The Point Shopping Mall from Sliema Ferries for additional pedestrian safety and visibility.
Solar-powered pedestrian crossings will also soon be installed in other localities, as more local councils understand the economic and environmental benefits in using such signage.
Each crossing is lit using environmentally friendly Light Emitting Diodes (LEDs) which emit no carbon emissions by using 100% renewable solar energy. The use of solar power makes installation easier as now trenching works and traffic disruptions are required to lay electricity cables beneath road surfaces.
The LEDs offer advanced lighting technology and require zero consumption of state-provided electricity. Sensors allow the signs to light up as soon as natural light dips under a specific level.
“More local councils are expressing interest in eco-friendly outdoor lighting, traffic signs and traffic management systems. Green initiatives taken by local councils enable us to develop more eco-friendly products. Our first venture consisted of a pilot project with the Attard local council where we installed eco-friendly and highly visible pedestrian crossing signage in the vicinity of St Nicholas Primary School. Since then, we have received highly positive response from residents and from other local councils together with constructive feedback to develop a second generation model. This is yet another step Smart Light Systems is taking as part of a long-term strategy for diversification,” said Mr. Jonathan J. Borg, Finance & Operations Director at Smart Light Systems, adding that “this has also given us a window of opportunity to start researching other Intelligent Transport Systems”.
The eco-friendly lighting used for this pedestrian crossing has been researched and designed in Malta and certified up to the highest European Union and German standards.
