Malta Independent Sunday, 11 September 2011, 00:00 Last update: about 15 years ago

Results published by an independent international website www.netindex.com at the end of August, have confirmed that Melita’s average download speed is faster that the average speed of other EU countries. Melita’s download speed is also faster than Malta’s average and almost three times faster than other local operators using either DSL or Wi-Max technology.

Netindex results for August show Melita’s average download speed at 17.8 Megabits per second with the EU’s average being 13.35 Megabits per second. On the other hand, average download speed results for Malta’s main DSL provider stands at 6.35 Megabits per second while Wi-Max provider is just 3.44 Megabits per second.

The speed results are based on thousands of tests performed by Maltese Internet users from their home computers or devices on the website www.speedtest.net to which all main internet providers in Malta are affiliated.

Commenting on these results, Ludolf Rasterhoff, chief operating officer at Melita said, “These results clearly show Melita’s leadership in the Maltese internet market. Just like in other European countries Melita’s cable technology is superior to DSL, thereby providing Melita’s Internet customers significantly higher download speeds. The feedback from our customers, especially those watching videos, downloading content and online gamers has been extremely positive, and with many commenting that they are impressed with the speed and the reliability of the service. Apart from the quality and reliability of the service, it is also extremely important to us that we develop attractive Fibre Power offers at an affordable price.”

Melita expects these results to continue to grow further as more residential and business customers are opting for Fibre Power packages. Unlike traditional broadband packages starting from 5 Megabits per second download speeds, Fibre Power packages start from 25 Megabits per second all the way to 100 Megabits per second downloads.
