GO told the leader of the Labour Party yesterday that in the very near future it will be in a position to offer subscribers the fastest mobile broadband and high-powered voice services.
During a visit to GO’s head offices in Marsa, Joseph Muscat was briefed on how GO subscribers would soon benefit from a first class service and with fast and reliable voice and mobile data connections as a result of GO’s multi-million investment in its mobile network.
During his visit, Dr Muscat was briefed on GO’s major investments over the past months – an integral part of GO’s €100 million investment spread out over a six-year period. The investment commitment that kicked off last year set out GO’s technology roadmap for the launch of next generation networks. Major projects include a roll out of fibre-powered services, various infrastructure investments that take in new services such as interactive tv and, above all, the extensive mobile network upgrades currently underway. As part of the visit, Dr Muscat was also taken round the engineering halls and the unified Networks Operations Centre (NOC).
At the Network Operations Centre (NOC), the Leader of the Opposition and his party were notified that GO has decided to set up this unified NOC located at its corporate premises in Marsa as part of its ongoing infrastructure development. The state-of-the-art centre allowed viewing, control, monitoring and management of GO’s entire network infrastructure from this one location.
Dr Muscat congratulated the technical specialists at the various sections for their dedication and efficiency in serving GO’s growing community at the same time providing business and residential subscribers with dependable customer support and value-added communications solutions.
GO chief executive officer David Kay and the other chief officers went on to give Dr Muscat details of the Radio Access Network (RAN) project now underway after GO recently signed an agreement with communications giant Nokia Siemens Networks (NSN), for the replacement of its existing radio mobile network with NSN’s energy-efficient, compact Flexi Multiradio Base Stations. NSN will also add new base stations to expand coverage and improve network performance. Further, GO would be deploying Nokia Siemens Networks’ NetAct network management system to efficiently monitor, optimise and configure its network.
Dr Muscat was informed that in addition to providing industry-leading performance upon deployment, the platform chosen by GO would provide a stable base for the introduction of the next generation of mobile technology, such as 4G, as it becomes available.
He was told that GO was in the process of deploying a fibre network in conjunction with the wider upgrading of the current network, with the installation of new cabinets that provide higher internet and data speeds as they are located within 1.5km of customers. The massive project triggered another of GO’s newest products and one of the most exciting of its high-tech developments, namely IPTV.
