Mr Justice Joseph Azzopardi, sitting in the First Hall of the Civil Court, has upheld a request for a couple to have their marriage certificate indicate the church where they actually got married because it was incorrect.
Evidence before the court showed that the mistake was made because the couple did not give the right information at the time.
Robert and Romina Sant started procedures against the Public Registry Director saying they got married on 11 March at Our Lady of Mt Carmel church, in St Paul’s Bay. The couple had originally planned to get married at the church of Our Lady of the Abandoned in Wardija but had to change plans due to unforeseen circumstances.
Before the publication of marriage bans according to law, the bride had personally notified the Wardija church they were to get married in another church but the Wardija church was still indicated.
The Public Registry Director refused to correct the marriage certificate when the parish priest informed him of the mistake, so the couple asked for its correction.
The court said that undoubtedly this was to be corrected but costs of the case are to be paid by the couple because they had not given the correct information.
