‘The Great Three B’s’ is a concert that is being held at Sagrestia Vault, Valletta Waterfront on Sunday, 27 November at 7pm. ‘The Three B’s’ is a phrase coined in the English language with a reference to three great classical composers, namely: J.S. Bach, L.V. Beethoven and J. Brahms.
The phrase ‘The Three B’s’ was coined by Peter Cornelius, a 19th century German composer. He originally hailed Bach, Beethoven and Berlioz as the three B’s, however later on in the century the famous conductor Hans von Bulow, substituted Berlioz with Brahms. The concert will be a tribute to these three great composers who have contributed so much to classical music.
The concert will be performed by the Trio Lakota: The talented pianist Charlene Farrugia, the violinist Natalia Filipenko and the violoncellist Yaroslav Mikluhko.
Charlene Farrugia, is a young pianist who although still in her 20s, has given diverse piano concertos and performed widely in Malta and abroad. She was a child prodigy who, at 13, gave a piano concerto at the Manoel Theatre, receiving a huge standing ovation.
Natalia Filipenko (violin) started her violin studies at the Kiev State Music College, after which she proceeded to the Kiev State Conservatory. She supplemented her violin tuition with lessons in theory and chamber music performance. Apart from performing as a soloist and in chamber ensemble, Ms Filipenko has also been a member of several orchestras, including that of Kiev Opera House for Children and Youths, the famous Kiev National Philharmonic Orchestra, and the orchestra of the Cairo Opera House.
Violoncellist Yaroslav Mikliukho obtained a Master’s degree from the Kiev State Conservatory and became a member of the orchestra of the National Ballet of Ukraine, later joining Kiev State Symphony Orchestra. Yaroslav performed with several other orchestras such as Filarmonic Der Nationene and Cairo State Symphony Orchestra. He has participated in various concert tours, which have taken him around Europe, North Africa and the US (Carnegie Hall in New York, Severance Hall in Cleveland).
The programme for the ‘Great Three B’s’ will feature J.S. Bach’s Cello Sonata in G minor BWV 1029, an elegant and vivacious composition. The trio will also be performing L.V. Beethoven’s Piano Trio op. 1 No. 3 which consists of four movements moving from a soothing piece of music to more vivacious movements with the Allegro con Brio and Menuetto. The programme ends with J. Brahms’ Piano Trio no. 2 op. 87 in C Major, a distinctive Viennese chamber music which he composed in 1882. It is a mature work full of colour and movement, lasting 30 minutes.
Artist Raymond Darmanin will be participating as he will be painting the scenes from the concert, integrating music and art. Free wine will be served after the concert. ‘The Great Three B’s’ is being organised by Barocco Cultural Events.
