Financial News Compiled by BOV Group: Mid-week session ends lower

Trading activity during the mid-week session on the Malta Stock Exchange ended in negative territory as the Index lost some of the gains registered during Tuesday’s session. In fact, the Index dipped by 0.3 per cent to close at the 3,090.482 level. This occurred when two equities ended the session lower and there were no gainers to counterbalance this decline. In the equity market, activity was spread across five companies as investors negotiated an aggregate of 107,978 shares over 17 deals.

GO shares headed the list of losers during the day as the equity declined by 5c or 5.0 per cent to close at the €0.950 level. Activity in the quadruple play telecommunications company resulted when 20,500 shares were transacted across four deals.

Likewise, FIMBank shares ended the session with losses as its share price depreciated by 3c of a US dollar or 3.9 per cent to close at $0.740. The trade finance specialist was the session most liquid and actively traded equity as investors negotiated 61,300 shares across six deals.

Meanwhile, Malta’s largest banks, Bank of Valletta (BOV) and HSBC Bank Malta were non-movers during the day as they closed unchanged at €2.500 and €2.580 respectively. Volume in both banks was relatively subdued.

Besides the major banks, RS2 Software also closed the day without registering any change in its share price and closed at the €0.590 level. Trading activity in the software company resulted when 20,000 shares were exchanged over a single transaction.

In the fixed interest sector of the market, activity was spread across eight corporate bonds and four government stocks. In the corporate bond market, five bonds closed unchanged while three ended higher. The session’s top performer was the 6.75% Corinthia Finance Plc 2012 bond which rose by 2 per cent to close at par. Investors exchanged a nominal of €2,500 across one deal.

In the sovereign bond market, one stock closed lower, while the rest ended higher. The day’s sole loser was the 7.8% MGS 2018, which declined by 1.3 per cent or €1.600 to close at €122.760.
