The board of the Malta Environment and Planning Authority yesterday granted the go-ahead for the upgrading and provision of additional facilities relative to an existing destination committed to religious activities at the Ta’ Pinu Sanctuary, in Għarb. The project includes the development of a retreat house, a visitors’ centre, ancillary facilities, car-parking areas and the re-planting of indigenous trees on Għammar Hill.
The approved development includes the resurfacing of the parvis and piazza into a totally pedestrianised area where vehicles will not be allowed onto the area fronting the sanctuary except in cases of emergency. The existing rooms below the piazza, are to be re-used as a retreat house with the addition of an extension which will link both sides of the parvis.
The extension will accommodate a total of 16 guestrooms on two floors, with a lift and stairway to access the adjacent existing south wing. This wing is spread on three levels, and accommodates a library, meeting rooms, a prayer area, sacristy and confessional. The existing south wing also includes a conference hall, dining hall and offices.
A car park, at the side of Triq Ta’ Pinu below Għammar Hill, will also be developed and will accommodate 93 cars together with access for all facilities including a wheelchair storage space.
The visitors’ centre will replace the existing buildings opposite the church and adjacent to the car park below Għammar Hill. The existing uses are being integrated within the new building which include a snack bar, police station, public convenience, tourist information office, storage area and a souvenir shop.
