Malta Independent Sunday, 22 July 2012, 00:00 Last update: about 14 years ago

Malta’s Ambassadors will be in Malta this week for their annual meeting, during which they will be briefed on several topics – with job creation and investment promotion at the top of the agenda. Over the past four years, Malta’s embassies have focused on commercial contacts aimed at attracting better investments in Malta. A number of concrete projects that have led to jobs being created have materialised, thanks to the efforts of the Ambassadors.

The Seminar on Wednesday, 25 July will start with a meeting for the non-resident Ambassadors. Briefings on efforts that have resulted in successful projects will be shared and discussed. They will be brought up to date with the latest developments vis-à-vis the 5+5 Summit that will take place in the next few months. The 5+5 is made up of five North African countries together with five European countries, including Malta.

Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Affairs Minister Tonio Borg will deliver a speech on Thursday morning, which will be followed by an address from the Deputy General Secretary for Foreign Politics and European Services of Foreign Affairs Helga Schmid. An open discussion with Ms Schmid will focus on the current challenges being faced by the European Union.

Malta Financial Services Authority chairman Joe Bannister will also be addressing the Ambassadors. His presentation will be on the subject of the economic crisis, with particular reference to the negative effects on countries such as Greece, Spain and Italy. This will be followed by a talk about the fact that Malta is still attracting foreign direct investments by the CEO of Malta Enterprise Lawrence Zammit.

During this week the Ambassadors will also be addressed by the Permanent Secretary in the Finance Ministry. The Chamber of Commerce, Enterprise and Industry will deliver a presentation on economic aspects and the impact the international crises has had on local business. There will also be talks about the eurozone, democratic progress in Libya and the work scheduled for Valletta as a European Capital City of Culture in 2018.
