Malta Independent Thursday, 11 October 2012, 00:00 Last update: about 12 years ago

The Malta Eight Ball Federation (MEBF) was recently set up for the sole purpose of promoting the popular game of 8-ball pool among all playing members within the Maltese Islands.

It has been established to develop the game of pool in Malta, based on human rights, democratic principles and social values, through local and international competitions, irrespective of race, religion, gender or politics.

Starting off with an outstanding response, with over 300 members and with 30 competing teams, the MEBF will be organising a fully packed season of 8-ball competitions throughout the 2012/13 season. Individual and team competitions are scheduled to be held.

The top tournaments will be the 6-a-side club league, the Knock-out and the Heineken Cup. All tournaments are sponsored by ‘Heineken’ – the main sponsor.

The MEBF has just finished its first ranking tournament at the Juventus Supporters Club in Birkirkara, where Kevin Schembri beat Mario Scicluna in the final to win the Open tournament.

Nicky Spiteri ousted team-mate Owen Amato to clinch the Under 23 title while youngster Leon Caruana was the better player in his challenge with Miguel Amato to win the Under 18 competition.

The Malta Eight Ball Federation, which is administered by former members of the Malta Pool Association, is at the moment in negotiations to affiliate itself with the European Blackball Association and will be participating in the EBA European Championships in Yorkshire next March.

The second ranking tournament is to be held next Monday 15 October at the pool hall at Juventus Supporters Club, B’kara.

Anyone or any club interested in joining the Malta Eight Ball Federation can contact the MEBF on 9942 0429 or send an email to [email protected]
