Madeleine Gera will be presenting an exhibition of 25 of her paintings at the Chamber of Commerce in Valletta. The works on display are a collection of colourful renditions done on location in the Mediterranean region, including Sicily, Croatia, Italy as well as Malta. The paintings were done while travelling in 2011 and include harbour scenes, city scenes and gardens in Ragusa and Dubrovnik.

The idea of a travelling palette has always appealed to artists such as Delacroix and his sketches of Travels in Morocco, and Amadeo Count Preziozi, the Orientalist painter of Maltese descent who travelled and painted extensively in the Ottoman Empire. This exhibition is intended to read as a collection of paintings from a travel log and is a starting point in depicting a region that for over 3,000 years has been a centre for the greatest civilisations. The Mediterranean can mean many things, as its geographical diversity is as varied as the many ethnicities that have lived around its shores from time in memorial. The concept behind this showing of 25 paintings is seeing Malta within its Mediterranean context.

The exhibition will be open from 15 to 22 November at the Chamber of Commerce, Exchange Buildings, Valletta.
