Muscat says PN gave refuge to barman associated with drug use

Malta Independent Tuesday, 19 February 2013, 14:08 Last update: about 12 years ago

Labour leader Joseph Muscat said he did not know of any drug abuse at the party’s Attard club, but the case rang a bell when "a block of ice" was mentioned.

He did not confirm it was the Safi PL club.

Addressing the media at University, Dr Muscat said that he understood the connection because the words used by the PN media on Sunday were the same the barman had used when he met him asking to be reinstated. He believes he met him some two years after the incident had taken place.

Dr Muscat said Dr Abela had informed him about the case. This person, Dr Muscat said, wrote to him twice and asked to meet him.

He claimed that he had nothing to do with drugs but had been cutting up a block of ice and asked to be given the job back, a request Dr Muscat declined.

The Labour leader said it was now up to the PN to say which version of the story they believed - the first which was that the man was involved in drugs, or the second that he had been cutting up a block of ice.

The PN had given the barman refuge, and now it is up to them to say whether or not they believe his version of events.

The issue was that the PL had laid off the bar man basing the information of what trusted third parties said because they had no proof or evidence and no one wanted to testify against the barman. The people definitely did not want to testify at any time ad the PL had no option but to protect their identity.

This would have definitely been a story had the barman been reinstated yet he never was.

Commenting on a photo he had taken with him, Dr Muscat said he takes photos with everyone although he now knows why he wanted the photo.

In reply to questions on the incident that took place on Sunday outside the Rabat PL club, Dr Muscat said that from the information he has so far, the case had nothing to do with politics. The people involved are not from Rabat and do not frequent the club.

He appealed against having this issue politicised because as the PL was cautious on the homicide case that took place at the Marsaxlokk PN club, because he feels the PN cannot be implied in it, the same should be said for the Rabat incident. He asked for caution since this is a time of an election campaign.
