Johan Mula, president of the Safi Labour Party club has confirmed to The Malta Independent online that he has given a statement to the police, following audio recordings posted on the internet in which Labour deputy leader Toni Abela referred to an incident in which ‘a white block’ was found in suspicious circumstances at this club.
The case dates back to 2009, but it only came to light in recent days when the audio conversation which took place during a meeting at the Labour headquarters was posted on YouTube.
In this conversation Dr Abela was heard saying that he had been approached by the club president (Mr Mula) who had informed him of an incident in which a man was found cutting a white block in the kitchen. This man was kicked out of the club while the white block - believed to be illicit substance - was thrown in the bin.
Dr Abela had remarked that he had not reported the case to the police as “God knows what would have happened”. This incident prompted the PN to demand the resignation of Labour’s deputy leader.
In his comments today, Mr Mula pointed out that this statement was made in recent days and not in 2009 when the incident had occurred. However he did not specify whether this was done following a request by the police or on his own accord.
The Safi PL president refused to comment any further saying that he might compromise the investigations.
