Dwejra Environmental Education Centre opened

Malta Independent Tuesday, 5 March 2013, 19:07 Last update: about 12 years ago

The Dwejra Environmental Education Centre, situated in one of the prime diving locations in Gozo and which is completely dedicated to local marine life, was opened today by Prime Minister Lawrence Gonzi.

The centre came about thanks to an initiative of the San Lawrenz Local Council together with Dr Alan Deidun from the University of Malta and is the first of its sort in Malta. A number of similar centres will open in Sicily in the coming months as part of an Italy-Malta EU project.

Dr Gonzi noted that few of us who are divers really know about the beauty of the sea around us and appreciate it. He emphasized the importance of local councils and urged people to participate in local council elections on Saturday as the right people can make a great difference, he said.

Gozo is offering a specialized product when it comes to diving and the standards must be kept high by taking care of our seas. Since 2008, all sewage is treated before going to the sea and this resulted in Malta having among the cleanest of seas in the Mediterranean.

The next step is to start using this treated sewage as second class water.
