While Energy Minister Konrad Mizzi refused to divulge in Parliament the name of the LNG tanker which the Government intends to moor in Marsaxlokk Bay, sources at the Electrogas consortium confirmed to The Malta Independent that the floating tanker is the LNG Gemini.

The LNG Gemini has a length of 285 metres, the size of three football pitches, and a gross tonnage of more than 95,000 tonnes.

Political controversy over the anchoring of a gas tanker in Marsaxlokk Bay to feed the power station has been ongoing for the past weeks, with the government saying that it is safer to have a similar facility inside the safety of the harbour rather than outside, while the Opposition insists that having a tanker anchored in the bay poses a great risk to residents living nearby.

PN leader Simon Busuttil said that the government has betrayed the people of the south, with Prime Minister Joseph Muscat saying that the tanker is not a permanent installation but will eventually be removed.
