Malta’s representatives at the Eurovision song contest made it to Saturday’s final in the semi-final held in Denmark held this evening.

Firelight, with their song “Coming home”, made it together with the representatives of Switzerland, Slovenia, Poland, Romania, Norway, Greece, Belarus, Finland and Austria.

Malta's name came up seventh in the list of 10 finalists selected from the 15 that took part this evening.

Six-piece band Firelight, representing Malta in this year’s Eurovision Song Contest in Copenhagen, opened tonight’s second-semi final with their song ‘Coming Home’.

15 countries are represented in the semi-final with only 10 allowed to make it to the 58th grand finale to be held this Saturday, when 25 countries in all will be contesting. As is common, there have been contradicting reviews regarding the song on the international media, with some ridiculing, others praising the song. Major betting companies William Hill and Ladbroke have listed Malta as placing 5th out of 10 during tonight’s semi-final.

The band have been said to already ‘feel at home’ - four out of the six band members are siblings Richard, Michelle, Wayne and Daniel. The four are accompanied by close friends Tony and Leslie.

Local songwriter Gerald James Borg has co-written this year’s entry for Russia, ‘Shine’, which made it through the first semi-final on Tuesday.

It is estimated that some 125 million viewers tune in to watch the contest each year. Ireland has won most times, seven so far; Norway on the other hand has placed worst over the years. Then little known Swedish pop band Abba contested in 1974 and subsequently became a leading worldwide band, and the most successful Eurovision Song Contest winner.
