The daughter of the ‘wrongly jailed’ man was arrested and made to testify in Court, but has since been released.

The girl's father was released from prison today having spent a year behind bars after being found guilty of defiling her.

His former wife is now being held in prison having been charged with perjury in connection with the man’s case. 

Magistrate Consuelo Herrera presided over a marathon 18-hour session as part of a magisterial inquiry, during which both the daughter and her mother testified last week.

A Constitutional case has been opened against the original Prosecutor, Inspector Louise Calleja.

Speaking during a press conference, the man’s lawyer Tonio Azzopardi said that key evidence such as the girl’s virginity was not taken into account.

Dr Azzopardi said that from the moment the man was jailed, he has been working around the clock to prove the truth.

“It is important that the other side of the coin be made know. Through the Constitutional case new proof has emerged,” Dr Azzopardi said.

Dr Azzopardi made his preoccupations about the case known to Police Commissioner Peter Paul Zammit, who took the “courageous” decision to appoint a new Inspector to the case, Sandro Camilleri.

“I am satisfied that my client has once again tasted freedom,” Dr Azzopardi said.

On being informed of his release, Dr Azzopardi said that his client broke down into tears.

“The first thing that he did upon his release was to visit the cemetery where his son who died of cancer aged 14 while he was in prison is buried," Dr Azzopardi said. 

Inspector Sandro Camilleri said that the fresh investigation started about two to three months ago. Mr Camilleri said that he immediately informed Magistrate Consuelo Herrera once there was enough evidence pointing towards the man’s innocence.
