A total of 196 government scholarships were awarded this year, with the number expected to increase in the last three months. Under the MGSS scheme, 24 students were awarded a Masters level scholarship, while 39 obtained a scholarship for doctoral (Phd) studies. A further 133 students will be awarded a Masters scholarship through the Master It! Scheme, amounting to €1.2million.
The Master It! Scheme has now reached its fourth call, so a further number of students will be granted a scholarship.
Figures of scholarships handed out in previous years are as follows: 430 scholarships in 2010, 270 in 2011 316 in 2012 and 80 in 2013.
Between 2006 and 2012, the administration invested over €20 million, and over 2000 scholarships have been awarded, 969 at Masters Level, and 231 for PhD Level.
The government offers scholarships under different schemes, the MGSS Undergraduate and Post Graduate, Master It!, Commonwealth, STEPS, Malta Arts Scholarship and Malta Sports Scholarship.
Such scholarships provide students the necessary funds to further their studies abroad. The fields the scholarships were awarded in vary from health, environment, finance, theatre, IT and manufacturing.
