Wait finally over: Teenager expected to undergo required scoliosis surgery after three-year delay

18-year-old Aaron Camilleri may finally be getting the surgery he needs, following a three-year wait. In September, The Malta Independent reported how bureaucratic procedures had hindered the teenager from undergoing a much needed scoliosis surgery, and how in the meantime, his scoliosis had deteriorated, heavily affecting his respiratory system. For three years, Aaron's family reached out to consultants and authorities; however the operation kept being postponed, for reasons unknown. In the report, Aaron's mother, Doreen, had expressed her disappointment, saying she felt she was taken by a ride by authorities.

Following the report, health parliamentary secretary Chris Fearne asked authorities to look into the case, and shortly after, Mater's Dei director contacted the family telling them they would be addressing the situation.

In comments to this newsroom yesterday, Doreen said that a consultant had addressed a letter to the general director at Mater Dei, to inform him that the teenager's urine, blood and blood pressure are stable enough for him to undergo the operation. This week, the family was informed that the director general, Dennis Baldacchino, contacted the surgeon abroad, and all that's left now is a date for the surgery. Writing on social media, Doreen said she hopes everything will go as planned, and that authorities cooperate with the family to give a chance to Aaron to lead the decent life he deserves.
