Palestinian author and architect-academic Suad Amiry said jokingly that she is flying over to Malta to talk about her mother-in law. Amiry, author of the famous book ‘Sharon and my mother-in law’ is presently living in Washington DC will attend the launch of the Maltese version of her book entitled ‘Sharon u l-Kunjata’, translated into Maltese by Jean Paul Borg . She has been touring capitals in different continents talking about her book which has already been published in twenty languages
The book contains 42 chapters related to the Israeli occupation of Ramallah in the occupied Palestinian territory in 2002. This book is surprisingly funny and different from other writings on the Palestinian-Israeli conflict. Suad talks about the struggle to live a normal life in an insane situation, from the impossibility of acquiring gas masks during the first Gulf War to her dog acquiring a Jerusalem passport when thousands of Palestinians couldn’t. The book contains a diary Amiry kept during the Israeli invasion when her 92-year old mother-in law was caught inside her house during a 42 day curfew.
‘With this curfew, I ended up with two occupations. One outside my house and one inside my house. I ended up with two occupations. I dont know, to tell you the truth, which occupation was more difficult. Once I told the Israelis: ‘One day I will forgive Ariel Sharon for what he did to us, but I will never forgive him for having my mother-in law with me for 42 days, which felt like 42 years.’
The launch will be held at St. James Cavallier, Valletta at 7pm. Excerpts of the book will be read by Mireille Mifsud while Suad Amiry will address the audience and sign copies of the book. The public is invited to attend. Entrance is free. ‘Sharon u l-Kunjata’ (SKS Publications) is on sale at local booksellers at the price of €15.
