Veteran windsurfer Paul Ellul has been given the go ahead to attempt a Malta-Sicily record crossing by windsurf on Saturday afternoon in an event being held in aid of the Malta Community Chest Fund. 

World renowned, US based, Commander’s Weather, who have been providing weather predictions to the team for the past days, have given their go ahead for the challenge to be attempted tomorrow at 1400hrs.  

The event, officially named The 89.7 Bay Malta - Sicily Windsurf Record Attempt, will see Paul Ellul   attempting to break the current record which stands at 5 hours 56 minutes achieved by Jean Paul Fleri Soler 30 years ago. 

Paul Ellul has been training hard for the past months, along with a team of people who will be monitoring the event and providing emergency services if required. 

“I’m excited and thrilled to finally be able to do the actual crossing.  My aim is that of generating funds for the Malta Community Chest Fund with a fun event.  The whole team is ready to go and all required gear is set for tomorrow.  Ultimately the date had to be set by mother nature, so when we were given the go ahead earlier today, I could barely contain my excitement, but we are well prepared” said Paul Ellul. 

The event is governed by a set of rules to make sure that all aspects, particularly those of fair play and safety are respected.  Paul will be accompanied by 2 high speed support RIBs, with a crew made up of an official time keeper, skippers, navigator and two riggers. 

The attempt is set to start tomorrow at 1400hrs from Exiles area in Sliema.
