Following the government’s announcement that Vitals Global Health care has been chosen as the preferred bidder for the new investment in the health sector, The Union for Midwives and Nurses is seeking reassurance that its members will not be impacted by the private investor.

The company was selected out of three submissions made for the redevelopment of St Luke’s Hospital,  Karen Grech Rehabilitation Hospital and Gozo General Hospital.

In a statement, MUMN said it is looking forward to start consolations to ensure that the conditions of employees will improve and that employees will start receiving the best treatment possible.

For the past weeks, the union has been discussing with the health ministry and a number of guarantees have been provided. Some of the issues are still to be discussed with the private investor. The union will be insisting that work conditions are improved.

MUMN said that it is seriously concerned about the lack of nurses in the country, insisting that issue needs to be addressed both for short-term and long-term.  The union has been discussing with the ministry about the possibility of a Faculty for Nurses in Malta. 

The union said it is committed to protect the interest of its members during negotiations and said it is expecting the government to take the role of a strong intermediary.

UHM reaches agreement with ministry

Meanwhile, Union Haddiema Maqghudin yesterday met with Health and Energy Minister Konrad Mizzi and Parliamentary Secretary Chris Fearne at Castille.

The meeting was set up to discuss the future of the employees of St Luke’s Hospital and Gozo General Hospital, given the Public Private Partnership.

he union put forward a number of preoccupations about employees, who may be impacted by the investment and also raised a number of suggestions for the interests of employees to be protected. An agreement was reached between the two parties.
