A police officer was injured today while carrying out escort duties for Libyan Prime Minister Abdullah al-Thinni, who is on a short visit to Malta for talks with PM Joseph Muscat.

It is understood that the policeman, part of al-Thinni's motorcycle escort, was hit by a car near the MCP car park in Floriana at around 5.15pm. He was hospitalised and a police spokesperson said it is too early to say what condition he is in.

Mr Al-Thinni was being driven to Castille from the airport.
