This year’s sought-after Notte Bianca arts and culture festival is to give prominence to the lower part of Valletta and not just the city centre, the festival’s organisers said.

Addressing a news conference this morning, event artistic director Sean Buhagiar said that this year “we will be celebrating the 10th anniversary of Notte Bianca”. He said that a number of activities will be held in the lower part of Valletta (near St Elmo), including drifting, to include this part of Valletta.

Drifting is a driving technique where the driver intentionally over-steers, causing loss of traction in the rear wheels.

V18 chairman Jason Micallef explained that V18 holds the Valletta community dear to its heart and this is why it wanted to include the whole of Valletta in this year’s activities. He said that the Kamrata zone will also be used.

This morning’s news conference was held at the St Mary’s Magdelene church in Valletta which was previously used to store carnival floats but was given back to the people recently.

Minister Owen Bonnici, who started off by saying that the church would be restored to its original state, said that Notte Bianca attracts some 60,000 patrons annually. He pointed out that 500 artistes will participate during this year’s festival.

Valletta mayor Alexiei Dingli meanwhile urged those attending to make use of public transport.
