Six dive centres in Gozo organised a cleanup of the Marsalforn seabed in collaboration with the Tourism Ministry to mark World Tourism Day 2015.
Atlantis Diving Centre, Calypso Diving Centre, Scuba Kings Dive Centre, Bubbles Dive Centre, Gozo Aquasports and Nautic Team Gozo all took part in this initiative for the second consecutive year.
The initiative saw several divers collecting waste found on the seabed that was both unsightly as well as harmful to the environment. It said that it was important to preserve the natural beauty of the seabed.
Quoting statistics published by the Malta Tourism Authority, it was revealed that around 30,000 tourists go to Gozo every year for the purposes of diving, representing more than 20% of tourists coming to Malta specifically for diving choose to stay in Gozo.
Minister for Gozo Anton Refalo said that our seas offer a lot of economic opportunity and that implies a responsibility towards our marine environment as well as general environment.
