Malta has been recognised for its work to eradicate Polio, a government statement said today.

During an event organised by the Global Citizen organisation in New York, where Prime Minister Joseph Muscat was special guest, it was said that there are only  two countries in the world left that do not have access to the polio vaccine.

Michael Sheldrick, representing Global Citizen, said how after he contacted the Prime Minister, Malta had taken the initiative and took steps to boost awareness needed for the international community to take further action against Polio.

It was said at the event that Malta grouped the Commonwealth Heads of State at the last CHOGM meeting held in Malta and together declared their commitment to eradicate Polio.

Prime Minister Joseph Muscat said that implementation is crucial, not only to eradicate the disease, but for the solution to remain sustainable for many years after.

"Dr Muscat was awarded a prize of excellence for the global values he is showing through his leadership".
