Firefighters this evening battled a large blaze at the former Holiday Inn hotel in Sliema.

The Civil Protection Department said several assets were sent on site and that a large amount of rubbish had been set on fire.

The disused hotel has seen several arson and vandalism attacks in the past few years.

It is understood that the police questioned a number of youths in connection with today’s fire.

The blaze was located at the uppermost floor of the building.
