Confessions of a mumpreneur

Monday, 17 April 2017, 14:42 Last update: about 10 years ago

What some people see as a risk, she sees as an opportunity.  What one could consider to be a disadvantage, she turns into an asset. We had the chance to have a one-to-one chat with Sandra Zammit who apart from being a full time mother of four wonderful kids, also produces Malta's most popular fresh fruit smoothies and ready-made vegetarian soups. Sandra opens up about her overall performance of juggling family life along with her business.  If there was one mantra I'd associate with her, it would be "where there is a will, there is a way".

As Sandra explains, "women can successfully combine family, career and time for themselves".  Here's what she says about work-life balance, serving as role model, and finding personal and professional purpose:

1. You embrace the fact that every aspect of your life changes

"Nobody can prepare you for motherhood... I think women believe they can do more than they actually can - they're very ambitious. I certainly did. Then every aspect of your life changes when you have children, and you have to re-balance everything and find new ways to multitask, delegate and manage.,, and that's when I realised that with four kids and no help, I would have been an employer's nightmare, so the idea of opening my own business and possibly building around my family's needs, started making sense.

2. You learn how to become more flexible

"I am learning how to be more flexible and to accept interruptions without getting flustered. Being the boss, my schedule is flexible - I can choose when to work. I can drop the kids at school, participate in activities and be available for them. Usually I am only available for meetings while the kids are at school, so as not to take time away from them. The trade-off is that when I have  deadlines, I stay up until the early hours finishing my work."

3. You learn the true meaning of family teamwork.

"The concept of raising a family alongside a business which I have come to also regard as one of my 'children' seemed like a daunting concept to begin with, occasionally having to miss out on various business opportunities to accommodate my children's health, schooling and a multitude of activities. However, juggling the two has really taught me how to tackle my daily challenges one by one and never to be overwhelmed by the lot. Having my family always support my ventures, successes, as well as failures has made the whole experience a whole lot more enjoyable. Sure, there are challenges and failures, but the entire family can step-up and help in many ways. We've realised how important it is to keep our kids engaged in the business and share our successes and challenges every day. We want our kids to see and experience how hard work and smart risk-taking is part of life's great adventure."

4. You are showing your kids how to accomplish big things.

"I love the opportunity to include my kids in my work and have them glimpse at what it means to be an entrepreneur and business owner, while balancing family life too... My hope is that they will know that work can fit into life and they can accomplish big things while making a difference for their families, too."

5. You teach your kids that you can work, be a mum and a wife.

"Having the possibility of running my own business whilst raising a family is a true blessing. I'm showing my children that it is okay to work, be a wife and a mother all at the same time... I understand that there's more than one way to be a good mum - being confident and balanced in life, I'm showing my children that you can be whatever you want to be without sacrificing the people and things you love."

6. You finally learn that 'the perfect time' is a myth

"I don't believe that there is any such thing as a perfect time to start a family or a business.  To me, the indicators for starting are ensuring that prior to either venture; you are truly willing to invest all your heart into something which you really have a passion for and at the same time, be ready to give it all the time it needs to cultivate either a prosperous business or a happy and healthy family or both. The truth is there's no real preparation to start a family until you're doing it. Once you get the hang of a particular phase, the next one hits you head on. In my case I started the business as soon as my youngest son started going to school. I was just the beginning of another journey".

7. You have more fulfilment and a sense of purpose.

"I love being a 'mumpreneur' because it allows me to feel fulfilled and it gives me a sense of purpose. This role that I have wilfully taken on, enables me not only to feel empowered, but it also helps me serve as an inspiration and a role model to my children. This being done with the intention of creating a better life both for our family, our business and our society".
