Valletta will welcome the sounds of China this September as the acclaimed Shanghai Chinese Orchestra presents two special musical events celebrating the Mid-Autumn Festival, one of the most cherished occasions in the Chinese cultural calendar.
Presented by the China Cultural Centre in Malta and the Manoel Theatre, the two-day programme on 2 and 3 September will offer audiences two distinct encounters with Chinese traditional music, beginning at the Centre and culminating in a major concert at the Manoel Theatre.
The celebrations open on Wednesday, 2 September, with 'Chinese Elegance: A Mid-Autumn Musical Evening' at the China Cultural Centre in Malta in Valletta. Beginning at 6.30 p.m., the performance will introduce guests to the distinctive sounds and character of Chinese musical traditions. A reception will follow. Those wishing to attend are invited to reserve a seat by emailing [email protected]
The following evening, Thursday, 3 September, the celebration moves to the Manoel Theatre for 'Music from the Sea', a full concert by the Shanghai Chinese Orchestra beginning at 8.00 p.m.
Founded in 1952, the Shanghai Chinese Orchestra is one of China's leading traditional music ensembles, recognised for bringing together the depth of China's musical heritage with a vibrant contemporary approach to performance.
Since its premiere, 'Music from the Sea' has travelled to 52 cities across 15 countries and regions and has been presented at leading cultural venues around the world. Acclaimed by audiences and the international press, it has established itself as a prominent international showcase for Chinese music.
Its presentation in Malta offers local audiences an opportunity to experience the colour, energy and expressive range of Chinese orchestral music, while marking the approach of the Mid-Autumn Festival - a celebration traditionally associated with reunion, togetherness and the appreciation of the full moon.
