Manuel Mallia, who was elected from two districts last time round, failed to be elected in Saturday's election.

Another minister, Edward Zammit Lewis, was also eliminated.

Among the big losers on the PN ticket are former ministers Carm Mifsud Bonnici, Francis Zammit Dimech and Censu Galea.

We also have a third party in Parliament, with Marlene Farrugia being elected on the 10th district. It is the first time since Independence that a third party made it to Parliament via an election. In 1989, Wenzu Mintoff had switched from Labour to the newly-formed Alternattiva Demokratika, but he had been elected as a Labour MP.

Both PL Leader Joseph Muscat and PN Leader Simon Busuttil were elected from the two districts they contested (Muscat on the 2nd and 5th districts, Busuttil on the 11th and 12th), meaning that their votes will now begin to be divided among the other respective candidates. Later, a by-election will then take place on one of the districts they give up.

Apart from the leaders, Edward Scicluna, Chris Fearne, Silvio Schembri and Michael Falzon (Labour) and David Agius, Robert Arrigo and Marthese Portelli (PN) were elected on two districts. Theynwill have to relinquish one of them and will be replaced by another candidate who contested on the district they give up.

On the first district, PN Deputy Leader Mario de Marco and Minister Jose Herrera were both elected, and for a time there were thoughts that Labour could win this district 4-1, instead of 3-2. But the transferring of votes later meant that the PN retained its second seat through Claudio Grech (who was elected without a quota after the elimination of Paula Mifsud Bonnici), while Labour elected newcomer Aaron Farrugia (to the detriment of Luciano Busuttil) and Deo Debattista.
